Bedan

A : position du bédane
(biseau vers le haut)
B : porte-outil légèrement
plus haut que l’axe
C : bois de fil

when I was an apprentice in my father's woodturning shop, I used bedans of exceptional quality.

Today I am able to offer this same quality of steel to all who wish to use this tool. The Escoulen bedans are made of forged high speed steel.
Forging evenly aligns the grain of the steel and gives an unusually fine and strong cutting edge. The bedan mostly cuts at the corners, so to prevent wear it is important to have the highest quality steel. Forged HSS is the ideal metal for this.

The use of the bedan with the bevel facing upwards is probably an old French woodturning tradition. Although it may not seem the logical way to cut, after a little practice the woodturner will soon realise the advantages of this method:
Faster cutting of all convex shapes when working along the grain and better precision.

Chuck

The Escoulen chuck is the result of several years of work and research.
It allows many different ways to further push the limits of the lathe and to create many unusual shapes with the gouge.

It does, however, need some practice and a number of trial pieces before the chuck can be mastered.

I have used it for many years and taught the use of it. I can assure you that it brings a lot of enjoyment and interest to creative woodturning.
